Open to unconventional approaches in research and teaching, the University of Bremen has retained its character as a place of short distances for people and ideas since its foundation in 1971. With a broad range of disciplines, we combine exceptional performance with great potential for innovation. As an ambitious research university, we stand for the approach of research-based study and a strong focus on interdisciplinarity. We actively engage worldwide scientific cooperation in a partnership-based approach.
Today, around 23,000 people learn, teach, research and work on our international campus. In research and teaching, administration and operations, we are firmly committed to the goals of sustainability, climate justice and climate neutrality. Our Bremen spirit is expressed in the courage to try new things, in supportive cooperation, in respect and appreciation for one another. With our study and research profile and as part of the European YUFE network, we assume social responsibility in the region, in Europe and the world.
At the University of Bremen, the Faculty of Mathematics/Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science has a vacancy for a

Tenure-Track Professor (f/m/d)
in rank W1 with tenure track to W2
initially as a temporary civil servant
for the field of
Computer Engineering with a focus on Distributed Systems

Reference number JP560/25
to be filled.
The professorship will initially be filled for a fixed period of three years. Following an interim evaluation for orientation purposes, it will be extended for further three years. Subject to a positive evaluation after six years at the latest, the contract will be extended to a tenured professorship (W2, Verbeamtung auf Lebenszeit).
We are looking for a person (f/m/d) who represents the field of computer engineering in research and teaching of computer science and is scientifically outstanding in at least one of the following areas:
  • Security in computer networks (e.g. protocols, authentication)
  • Hardware architectures (e.g. network architectures, network-on-chip)
  • Software architectures (e.g. micro-services, service-oriented architectures, concurrency)
  • Applications of distributed systems (e.g. AI learning methods, block chain)
  • Ubiquitous computing (such as the Internet of Things)
In addition, it is expected that during the tenure phase, an active research profile will be established in an additional of the areas mentioned.
The professorship should be involved in the relevant Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Computer Science and participate in cooperative degree programs (e.g. Systems Engineering). The teaching portfolio should include both basic modules and specialization modules. Lectures on computer networks and information security should be offered regularly alongside courses on computer engineering. The willingness to offer courses in German and English is expected; knowledge of one of these languages should be available after three years at the latest.
Participation in the concept of “research-based learning” and in the form of project studies is also desirable. Initiatives and experimentation in teaching as well as contributions to the internationalization of the University of Bremen are expected.
The University of Bremen is home to the EASE Collaborative Research Center, the CAUSE Graduate School, the Data Science Center and the MMM (Minds-Media-Machines) research focus, as well as the Technology Center for Information Technology (TZI). The DFKI-Bremen is associated. Cooperation with one or more of these institutions, in particular with MMM, is expressly desired.
The University expects the job holder (f/m/d) to contribute to research funding by acquiring third-party funds and to participate in research and technology transfer.
In addition to fulfilling the general recruitment requirements under civil service law, a special aptitude for academic work, proven by a relevant academic degree and a relevant high-ranking recent doctorate, as well as pedagogical aptitude are expected. A willingness to participate in further training in higher education didactics and to promote young academics as well as initial experience in acquiring third-party funding are expected.
Tenure-track professors are relieved of some of their teaching duties at the beginning of their employment so that they can develop their academic profile. Appointments are made on the basis of §§ 18, 18a BremHG and § 117 BremBG. According to these, the doctoral and employment phases together should not have lasted more than six years. Applicants who have already completed their doctorate in Bremen must have changed universities after completing their doctorate or have worked outside the University of Bremen for at least two years.
Please contact the Dean of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Prof. Dr Rolf Drechsler (dekan@fb3.uni-bremen.de), if you have any questions about the recruitment process or the content of the advertised position.
The university is family-friendly, diverse and sees itself as an international university. We therefore welcome all applicants regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion/belief, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity.
The University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female employees in academia, which is why women are expressly encouraged to apply. In the case of equal qualifications, women will be given priority, unless reasons relating to the person of a competitor prevail.
Please send your application with the usual documents (letter of motivation, CV with list of publications, teaching and research concept, copies of academic degrees, etc.) by 18.06.2025, quoting the above reference number, as a PDF file by unencrypted electronic mail to: jp560@fb3.uni-bremen.de or by post to:
