The University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN), founded in 2021, is a living laboratory for the university of the future-adapted to the age of artificial intelligence and to constant technological, economic, and social change. The academic Organization of the UTN is based on Departments as central structural units. The Departments of Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence and of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences are already established. Three further Departments are in development: Biological Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, and Natural Sciences. Departments at the UTN are characterized by flat hierarchies and öfter exciting opportunities for challenging and rewarding career paths. The University of Technology Nuremberg is looking to fill, at the earliest possible date, a Position as a
Professor (m/f/d) (W3) of Philosophy of Science and Epistemology
at the Department of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences.
Your tasks:
In the Department of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, you will represent the discipline of Philosophy of Science and Epistemology in research and teaching. We are looking for candidates who combine historical and philosophical methodologies.
You will essentially contribute to the University's first focus area, 'Human and Artificial Intelligence', which is dedicated to the study of possibilities and limitations of artificial intelligence and human cognitive abilities. You will collaborate with colleagues in the history of philosophy, classics, psychology and cognitive Science, as well as with researchers who focus e.g. on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to a second focus area 'Opinion Forming and Political Communication in the Age of AI'.
Your profile:
Your research should focus on the philosophy of Science and its history and in addition on epistemology and its history. We expect you to approach systematic questions with a combined methodology that has historical and philosophical features. Preferably, your historical focus should be on pre-modern or early modern periods, but we will also consider candidates with historical expertise on the 19,h or early 20th Century if their research addresses continuities and transformations to earlier, especially pre-modern, epochs
We are looking for researchers with an outstanding record and international visibility. Experience in conducting interdisciplinary research constitutes an advantage. In your application and during the selection process, you should demonstrate how your research would fit into and complement the current department profile as well as your interest in collaborating with other disciplines at UTN. An interest in university’s second focus area, ‘Opinion Forming and Political Communication in the Age of AI which examines the evolving dynamics and complexities of communication within liberal democratic societies, with a particular focus on the impact of digital transformation and the rise of generative AI, would be advantageous.
Teaching experience, ideally in interdisciplinary contexts, is required. We expect you to participate in all Englishlanguage courses offered by the department, contribute to the development of degree programs, be committed to implementing innovative, digital teaching and learning concepts, and be willing to cooperate within the department and beyond.
We expect the ability to lead a research group, openness for the department structures at UTN as well as an awareness of issues of diversity and equal opportunities for women in Science. An interest in or experience with Science communication would be advantageous.
The legal hiring criteria according to Article 57 Paragraph 1 & Article 60 Paragraph 3 BayHIG apply. Therefore, a university degree is a prerequisite, as well as a particular aptitude for research, usually demonstrated through a doctorate or equivalent scientific qualification. Furthermore, applicants must demonstrate additional scientific achievements beyond their doctorate or doctorate-equivalent qualification, as well as pedagogical aptitude.
