The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and chemistry and process engineering.

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:
  • Supervision of the laboratory μ-CT equipment in division 8.5
  • Further development and application of X-ray tomographic methods for the non-destructive characterization of materials and components, including in-situ experiments
  • Coordination of scientific activities in division 8.5 on the topic of computer tomography
  • Active acquisition and management of research projects
  • Supervision of doctoral students, students, and technical staff
  • Use of AI methods for quantitative evaluation of XCT data sets
  • Active participation in BAM topic areas (with a focus on materials and energy)
  • Cooperation with internal and external research groups and industrial partners
  • Active participation in national and international committees
  • Detailed scientific documentation of results through technical articles, presentations at national and international conferences, publications, reports

Your qualifications:
  • University degree in physics, engineering, electrical engineering, or comparable field with a good doctorate
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in computed tomography
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in digital image processing and analysis
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of computer tomographs
  • Experience in non-destructive testing for industrial applications
  • Experience in the design and implementation of test setups and instrumentation, especially for in-situ tests
  • Experience in planning laboratories for computed tomography equipment is desirable
  • Good knowledge of materials science
  • Experience in acquiring, managing, and conducting research projects
  • Experience in supervising students and doctoral candidates
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages relevant to the task (e.g., Python, Matlab, Labview, C++)
  • Business fluent German and good English skills (spoken and written)
  • Good communication and information skills, goal-oriented and structured approach to work, initiative/commitment and ability to take initiative, decision-making skills and ability, as well as teamwork and willingness to cooperate
